During the 13th and 14th centuries, Besh-Ba-Gowah served as a redistributional center for goods such as shell and turquoise jewelry, painted pottery, and ceremonial activities. To protect these goods, control of access into the site was important.”

“This is the first scientifically excavated ceremonial room ever discovered at a large Salado site. The room is surrounded on three sides by benches where participants sat and observed the ceremonies. Against the east side was a low altar. Above the altar is a smoke and echo chamber, used to enhance the various ceremonies. Below the altar is a small square hole (not visible in the picture) called a sipapu. The sipapu was filled with ground turquoise and sealed by a large quartz crystal. Anthropologists believe the sipapu represents an earth navel where spirits can pass from middle earth to this world.”
